The brand name for the thickening agent Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC), also known as Natrosol, which is made by etherifying alkaline cellulose with either ethylene oxide or chloromethane. Under the trade name HEC, it is widely used as a drilling mud addition in the oil and gas sector. Its hue is either white or yellowish. It is odorless, non-toxic, fibrous or powdered, and it belongs to the class of cellulose ethers that are soluble in non-ionic solvents.
